NASA provided details on July 15 about the Artemis III flight scheduled for next year. A crew of four will launch aboard Orion on NASA's Space Launch System rocket into Earth orbit, where the capsule will separately dock with Blue Origin's Blue Moon and SpaceX's Starship. Blue Moon will launch first on Blue Origin's New Glenn rocket from Space Launch Complex-36 at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, capable of remaining in space for up to 30 days. SLS/Orion will lift off next from Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex-39B, then rendezvous and dock with Blue Moon for about two days. Neither the Blue Moon Mark 2 nor Starship flying on this mission will be their final landing-capable versions; part of Artemis III's purpose is to help both lander providers mature designs based on in-flight data.

Why It Matters

Artemis III represents a level of orbital complexity America has never attempted with crew. Only Soyuz T-15 in 1986 managed a similar multi-spacecraft rendezvous, when cosmonaut Leonid Kizim flew between Salyut 7 and MIR. Artemis III requires coordinating multiple launch vehicles across different pads at KSC and CCSFS, including cross-agency collaboration for range availability and resource constraints like nitrogen gas. Success will set the stage for a crewed lunar landing on Artemis IV. A Blue Origin New Glenn engine test explosion in May at SLC-36 has raised questions about timeline confidence, though CEO Dave Limp has voiced confidence in returning to flight by end of 2026.
